Professional Experience
 

Mr. Snodgrass has over twenty years experience in the restoration/construction industry, with specific training in building construction, architecture, materials conservation and historic preservation.  He has professional technical experience specializing as an architectural conservator and in the preservation of historic structures, as well as project oversight and construction management of restoration projects.  He has directed conservation and restoration programs for a wide range of regional governmental, institutional and private projects, and at the national and international level he was responsible for development and coordination of restoration programs and implementation teams for a variety of historic structures and monuments.

As a founding Principal of Historic Construction Management Corp., a full service Construction Management/Implementation firm specializing in diagnostic investigation, assessment services and restoration trades for historic preservation projects, Mr. Snodgrass provides specialized expertise and technical assistance for all restoration and conservation programs, project design/development, as well as management and construction supervision.  Current project work includes diagnostic assessment and construction management of several prominent local historic structures, including the c. 1812 Setauket Presbyterian Church Steeple restoration; historic roof restoration of the c. 1795 Kissam House for the Huntington Historic Society; and budget analysis/restoration specification of the c. 1829 Wiles House for the Town of North Hempstead.  Complimentary work includes complete conditions assessment, budget analysis, project design/specification and construction management provided for the exterior restoration of the c. 1910 Old Town Hall, for the Town of Babylon, NY; restoration of the c. 1740 Old Arsenal and the c.1830 Manor Farm house for the Town of Huntington; and restoration of the c. 1790 Prosper King house for the Hampton Bays Historical and Preservation Society.  This encompassed specialty site work, complete foundation re-design and construction, timber-frame restoration and replica millwork. 

As a Conservator in Private Practice he provided architectural conservation consulting specializing in historic preservation, and concentrating on the development of conservation programs for historic structures and monuments, tailored project coordination and management, as well as implementation and on-site supervisory services.  Project highlights included assessment of the Stanford University Memorial Church, Palo Alto, CA; site conservation of Planting Fields State Historic Park, Oyster Bay, NY; diagnosis of the Moab Sandstone Monument, Moab, UT; conservation of Historic St. Peter’s Burying Ground, Philadelphia, PA; and restoration supervision of the Georgian Court Bridge, Lakewood, NJ. 

As a Restoration Specialist for both The Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA) and A.G. Wetzel Construction Corporation, Mr. Snodgrass oversaw the coordination, administration, and implementation of grant-stimulated capital improvement and restoration projects, and provided in-house technical expertise for restoration and architectural conservation services.  Projects included working with municipal governments to establish historic preservation advocacy guidelines, creation of historic districts, and enforcement of preservation covenants and grant administration, as well as overseeing restoration specification and construction supervision for field work. 

As Director for Integrated Conservation Resources, Inc., he coordinated all conservation services regarding historic buildings and monuments; including project management, training and supervision of site crews, documentation, laboratory analyses, testing of materials, and the development and execution of treatment programs.  Project highlights included Grand Central Terminal, NYC; the Minnesota State Capital, St. Paul, MN; the St. Gauden’s Caryatids, Buffalo, NY; the Silverton Town Hall, Silverton, CO; and the Provincial Legislative Complex, Toronto, CAN.  

As Senior Research Specialist for the Architectural Conservation Laboratory, Graduate School of Fine Arts, University of Pennsylvania, and Senior Staff Conservator, Center for Preservation Research, Columbia University, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Mr. Snodgrass was responsible for coordinating and oversight of technical research teams in architectural conservation research/laboratory testing focusing on the examination and treatment of historic buildings and monuments.  Projects included field diagnosis and documentation of Drayton Hall National Historic Site, Charleston, SC; laboratory analysis and field assessment of The Rookery, Chicago, IL; restoration of Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Savannah, GA, and Center Church Historic Crypt, New Haven, CT; and stabilization of the Cabildo Pedimental Sculpture, New Orleans, LA. 

Mr. Snodgrass has taught courses and has lectured on numerous levels.  At the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Fine Arts he taught a Graduate level Conservation Seminar and was an Adjunct Lecturer at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.  He has lectured at national and international conferences including the Restoration International Conference (Boston), the annual international conference of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works/AIC (Richmond), and the annual international conference of the Association for Preservation Technology/APT (Chicago).  He has also lectured for regional training seminars for the National Park Service Restoration Training Program, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYS-OPRHP), and the International Masonry Institute. 

He has been published in technical bulletins and trade journals, including the Bulletin of the Association for Preservation Technology (APT Bulletin), the Journal of the American Institute for Historic and Artistic Works (JAIC), and Traditional Building Magazine.

Mr. Wetzel has over twenty-five years of direct involvement in the restoration/construction industry, with first hand experience in all aspects of the construction process. His professional business experience encompasses that as principal of Historic Construction Management Corp., a specialized construction management firm, providing a unique blend of consulting, conservation, construction management and crafts execution capabilities as well as that as principal of A.G. Wetzel Construction Corp., a full service general contracting firm of over 40 employees engaging in projects ranging from specialty fabrication and millwork to multi-million dollar commercial and institutional renovations.

He has operated as a full service contractor specializing in the construction management of restoration and historic preservation projects, with work types spanning a broad base, ranging from high-end residential construction to institutional restoration and preservation projects, including, including the construction of music and video recording studios, public school annexes, retail spaces, commercial restaurant fit-ups as well as church and library renovation/restorations. Mr. Wetzel also has extensive experience in high-end custom residential projects, with capabilities covering the full spectrum of construction processes, ranging from a fully equipped custom cabinetry and millwork shop, specialty masons, plaster artisans, finished carpentry and heavy equipment/site work operations capabilities. 

His breadth of experience as an independent contractor has encompassed such projects as the construction of the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts 1987 video arts and recording studios and the 1989 re-construction of their main administration building, specialty design & construction of computer battery back-up facilities and interior office fit-ups for New York COMEX, Maiden Lane, N.Y.C.,  Specialty millwork and interior renovations for the “Mario’s Italian Restaurant” in Mineola N.Y., and the “Mediterranean Manor” catering hall(s) in Patchogue, N.Y., site installation, tie-in and interior millwork & finishes of pre-fabricated class room annexes for the Eastport, N.Y. School District, ecclesiastical millwork and restoration for St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Northport, N.Y. and St. Hugh of Lincoln Catholic Church, Huntington Station, N.Y. 

Restoration and construction projects have spanned a large variety of high-end residences throughout the north shore and east end of Long Island and have included the restoration of the 18th century “Sherrewoque” estate in Head of the Harbor, N.Y, expansion of the main club house and exterior terrace renovations at “The Creek Club” in Lattingtown, N.Y., the renovation of the former c.1842 Methodist Church into the new headquarters of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA), located in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., and a multi-year restoration of the c.1914 “Brewster Estate” located in Muttontown, N.Y.

The “Brewster” project represented “rescuing” the severely vandalized former estate and encompassed all aspects of restoration, including assessment, design specification and construction management regarding the specialty restoration of historic brick and limestone facades, slate and copper roofing, decorative plaster, millwork and interior finishes, as well as design and construction of a fully operational commercial kitchen and 300 person capacity, multi-function, electronic “Media” room. 

Recent projects have included the construction management of several prominent Historic structures, including the c. 1812 “Setauket Presbyterian Church” steeple restoration, roof restorations of the c. 1795 “Kissam House” and the c. 1895 “Soldier’s and Sailors Memorial Building” for the Huntington Historic Society and complete project design, coordination and project management of the c.1830 “Manor Farm” house for the Town of Huntington, N.Y., as well as conditions assessment, analysis, design specification and construction management of the exterior restoration of the c. 1910 “Old Town Hall”, for the Town of Babylon, N.Y. and restoration of the c.1790 “Prosper King” house for the Hampton Bays Historical and Preservation Society, encompassing specialty site work, complete foundation re-design and construction, timber-frame restoration and replica millwork.
